Peter Burke is emeritus professor of cultural history at the University of Cambridge and a fellow of Emmanuel College. He is one of the most eminent and prolific historians of early modern Europe and has written some thirty books on subjects as diverse as the Annales School of history, the art of conversation, the social history of media from Gutenberg to the present, of knowledge, exiles and expatriates, and the cultural history of polymaths. He is an expert of the Italian Renaissance, and one of his most recent books is Play in Renaissance Italy.
